Preparation Method Steps:

  1. Preheat oven to 180°C/160°C fan/gas 4. Grease and line a 20cm square cake tin.
  2. Cream together the butter and sugar until light and fluffy. Gradually beat in the eggs.
  3. Sift together the flour and baking powder, then fold into the wet ingredients alternately with the milk. Stir in the vanilla extract.
  4. Divide the mixture into two equal portions. To one portion, add the almond paste and mix well.
  5. Spoon the two mixtures into the prepared tin, alternating colors. Bake for 25-30 minutes, or until a skewer inserted into the center comes out clean.
  6. Leave to cool in the tin for 10 minutes before turning out onto a wire rack to cool completely.
  7. Cut into squares and serve.
