Christmas Stollen

Ingredients and Weight:

Preparation Time:

45 minutes

Cooking Time:

1 hour and 15 minutes

Difficulty Level:

3/5 (Moderate)

Preparation Method Steps:

  1. In a large bowl, whisk together the warm milk and yeast. Let stand for 5 minutes, or until foamy.
  2. Add the flour, butter, sugar, eggs, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt to the bowl with the yeast mixture. Mix until a dough forms.
  3. Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface and knead for 5-7 minutes, or until smooth and elastic.
  4. Place the dough in a lightly greased bowl, cover it with plastic wrap, and let rise in a warm place for about 1 hour, or until doubled in size.
  5. While the dough is rising, combine the candied orange peel, candied lemon peel, cranberries, cherries, and rum in a bowl. Stir well to combine and set aside.
  6. Once the dough has risen, punch it down to release the air.
  7. Roll out the dough into a large rectangle, about 12x18 inches.
  8. Spread the filling evenly over the dough, leaving a 1-inch border around the edges.
  9. Roll up the dough from the long side, starting from one of the short ends. Pinch the edges together to seal.
  10. Place the stollen in a greased 9x5-inch loaf pan.
  11. Cover the stollen with plastic wrap and let rise in a warm place for about 30 minutes, or until nearly doubled in size.
  12. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).
  13. Bake the stollen for 45-50 minutes, or until golden brown.
  14. Let the stollen cool for about 15 minutes before dusting with powdered sugar.
