  1. In a large bowl, whisk together the warm water, yeast, and sugar. Let stand for 5 minutes, or until the yeast is foamy.
  2. Stir in the whole wheat flour and salt. Mix until a dough forms.
  3. Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface and knead for 5-6 minutes, or until it becomes smooth and elastic.
  4. Form the dough into a ball and place it in a lightly oiled bowl. Cover and let rise in a warm place for 1 hour, or until doubled in size.
  5. Punch down the dough and shape it into a loaf. Place the loaf in a 9-inch Dutch oven that has been oiled.
  6. Cover the Dutch oven and let the bread rise for another 30 minutes.
  7. Preheat the oven to 450°F (230°C).
  8. Remove the lid from the Dutch oven and bake the bread for 30 minutes.
  9. Reduce the oven temperature to 375°F (190°C) and continue to bake for another 25-30 minutes, or until the bread is golden brown and sounds hollow when tapped.
